I believe the T5 and GLT have the same base suspension (with an
optional PSort suspension availabl for the T5). The tires do make
a big difference. I recently switch from the Stock Michelin XGTV4s
(wore out at 25K) to Bridgestone Potenza -- ride is now much more
harsh with the Brisgestones (but it sure sticks to the ground better).
(Bridgestones are 55 series as were the OEM tires). However, I think
the OEM tires were a better compromise for every day driving; I guess
Volvo tuned the suspension well for those tires.
Some people have reported some problems with the clutch when starting
in first gear. It is harsh and feels like it does not engage smoothly.
I would call it minor clutch chatter. Note that this is masked if you start off "quickly". So, make sure you try some slow, mellow, starts
to see if you can live with the way the clutch engages. (I have this problem with my 98 T5M.)
When I first drove the car I thought it had a lot of torque
steer but I quickly adjusted to it -- no problem now.
Also, if you do a fast full-throttle acceleration test you might
want to turn of TRACS -- it makes the front wheels hop on dry
pavement during full-throttle starts (turn it off and just let the
tires spin).
As far as engine reliability I think the T5 will do fine. It is
beefed up compared to the GLT (thicker cylinder walls for handling
added heat, different pistons and valves to also handle more heat).
It also uses oil sprayed on the underside of the pistons to cool
the pistons (I believe this was added to all engines in 99, anyone
know?) It's a strong engine!
