Suspension: if you can drive an 'R' here in Sydney/Australia you can drive a T5 anywhere. Suspension is stiff (rim damage is common with the 17 inchwheels) however I've had worse. The T5 supposedly rides better again.
Power: I drove a GLT (no way my scene!). I believe the T5 engine is a sweet compromise with torque being a huge plus. The low press turbo should be reliable given the R models go well mechanically (most problems don't relate to engine). Don't forget the extra std equipment in the T5.
Torque Steer: mate, I've been scared before however my 850R made me go white with its darting and lively behaviour. All these things need is a GOOD wheel alignment from an EXPERT. I went to a Porsche racing workshop who charged a pile of money, but the car now goes STRAIGHT and is a sweet thing to drive. I don't know if the lack of LSD on the T5 makes any difference.
Reliability: I've had Fords, GM, Mitsubishi, Subaru - all have had problems whether new or not. The new Taurus would only save you money by having a warranty. All car companies pretty much make rubbish for at least some parts in the car.
