AFAIK, most engines are supposed to have a small amount of taper intentionally machined into each bore.
I will ask my machinist how much he uses on our Volvo engines the next time I see him.
I found a link on machining engine cylinders and in that article it mentions that older engines may need as much as .010" taper and that some modern engines require far less taper needing only .0006".
I know our machinist uses a boring bar to make the rough cut and then transfers the block to his Sunnen CK10 honing machine to finish up the bores.
