Could this have caused a melted fusebox? 700 1986

In a word...No.
The distributor is not connected to the fusebox.
Fuse socket melted either because there there was close to 25 amps flowing through it for quite awhile (and Volvo used the wrong plastic) or most likely, there is a corroded contact in that area (fuse to receptacle, wire to receptacle) and heat was generated by the poor connection (resitance).
