What little I know of 740s 700 1986

...there is a corroded contact in that area (fuse to receptacle, wire to receptacle) and heat was generated by the poor connection...

Like you, I'm pretty sure, without even finding the picture, this is the cause.

All I know about 700 cars I learned in the junkyard, and it wasn't much, beyond the curious common trait each had, of either missing the fuse panel, or having one, burned and melted, already exposed. Similarly, the later 240's all had their instrument clusters hanging out.
