Did you maybe throw people off the track when you said 2-stroke? That got everyone thinking about the old 2-stroke Saabs, of which I have had several and remember fondly. Your later post made it seem that you meant 2-cylinder rather than 2-stroke, since you said you intended to run it on 1 & 4.
I don't know if converting from gas to steam is feasible, but if it is, I don't quite see why a custom crankshaft is that much help. I would think maybe a custom camshaft would be more in order, and that should not cost much at all compared to a crankshaft.
Given that you only need a short engine lifespan does make it seem more doable.
