I need an antenna, what and where?? 120-130 1967

I am in great need of an antenna on my 2 door 122. Before I go and drill a hole in my fender, I would like to know what the stock size and position of the hole was.

If someone could take some measurements for me and or send pictures, I would greatly appreciate it. I would like to know how far the hole should be forward from the back of the fender (where the rain gutter comes down) and how far over from where the fender meets the hood. Also what size hole/antena should I drill/buy?

Thanks,

mario m

Re: I need an antenna, what and where?? 120-130 1967

So you have an amazon with unmolested fenders? I'd leave them alone and get a roof mount magnetic base antenna as used with CB radios. I bought a 122 with the antenna on the left side, and a crunched right fender once, try to find a right fender with no hole in it. There has to be some way to pick up radio signals without abusing sheetmetal, have you called around to car stereo places? Call Jantzen beach Cartoys, talk to Doug, those guys have cooked up some great ways to install top line gear in classic cars without chopping them up.

Before you drill a hole make sure your aerial actually fits the car. Most don't because of the curvy nature of the front wing. IMHO a chrome roof aerial looks most appropriate

Pete:

Aren't you in the UK? I believe roof mounted antennae are/were more common there. I have also noticed that new products from Audi and VW have roof mounted antennae.

My recollection for US delivered cars was that the radio was added by the dealer after the car was purchased. Some antennae were mounted on the right front fender(wing) and sometimes the dealer mounted the antenna on the panel between the back edge of the hood(bonnet) and the windscreen. I believe this is known as the scuttle in the UK.

Re: I need an antenna, what and where?? 120-130 1967

Most every one I've seen in the US has the same right fender mounted type(straight, heavy gauge, non-extendable, with a tip made of bakelite plastic). . . originals aren't all that easy to find anymore in good shape. There is a near-identical reproduction of this on the market, with same shape tip (but metal) used for Jags and Britcars, but beware -- the mount can't handle the curve of the fender very well and modification will be required to get it mounted straight.

I'm still puzzled by my early '67 wagon - it's antennae is original, but mounts on the left A-pillar (left side of windshield)and is extendable.

Anyone else seen one of these?

Re: I need an antenna, what and where?? 120-130 1967

I had a '74 144 parts car with a very similar antenna, but mounted on the RIGHT a-pillar. I tried to salvage it for use on my '73, but upon removal, it crumbled in my hands.

Interestingly, the gasket was embossed "fits DATSUN".

I think dealers were pretty much on their own until the mid '80's. I've had lots of 240's that rightfully should have had a-pillar antennas, but instead had other kinds.

Re: I need an antenna, what and where?? 120-130 1967

I am indeed in the UK. As far as I know the aerials are still available here. They were commonly used on stuff like Rover P6.

I think here too the aerial was a dealer added item. They're awkward to get right. I personally don't like the scuttle mount aerial. The scuttle is a box section and mounting it tends to cause leaks. Fixing rotted out screens is not fun.

I guess in perio there must have been aerials available that were a good fit onto the fender, but nothing modern I've seen looks convincing.

As in windscreens (windshields on this side)?

Who, where, when has roof mounted aerials? Would these be mounted center?front of roof? Does one have to remove headliner to fish across and down pillar to underdash? I also presume it would slope back to reflect the angle of the windshield. How long an aerial would this be? Which manufacturer would have made this (Lucas?) Any currently marketed cars with this aerial fitted? Any retractables?

Re: I need an antenna, what and where?? 120-130 1967

Could you describe or show a picture of what a roof aerial looks like properly set up? Most of the antenas I have seen on 122s in the past a tall antena was placed smack dab on the high point of the right front wing (fender) a few inches in front of where it the wing runs into the door. I am really curious about this roof aerial thing, what years was this popular, were they still in common use in 1967?

Does sound appropriate. I must see a roof mounted aerial. Photo please.

Mario send me your e-mail address and I'll send you a pic of my car .. remember that in those days the radio was a dealer installed option and they put it where ever you wanted it put ..
