Aren't you in the UK? I believe roof mounted antennae are/were more common there. I have also noticed that new products from Audi and VW have roof mounted antennae.

My recollection for US delivered cars was that the radio was added by the dealer after the car was purchased. Some antennae were mounted on the right front fender(wing) and sometimes the dealer mounted the antenna on the panel between the back edge of the hood(bonnet) and the windscreen. I believe this is known as the scuttle in the UK.
