Hi folks,
Among the many I am doing on my 940 right now, I have decided to install a brand new coolant sensor level _ P/N 3547710.
Now, I cannot find the P/N for the female connector housing with pigtails that goes in the male here below:

I have no junkyards near me, however those connectors should only cost a few bucks at Volvo.
Could you please help me find the P/N?
Thank you,
Alessandro

Hi Alessandro,
Here's another option- an automotive terminal kit, crimper and pins:

Good luck, Bill

It's a rare day Spook can't find a p/n in his collection of Vadis CDs, so I had to take the challenge. It took a bit of searching, but I believe the female 2-pin Molex connector for the expansion tank coolant level sensor is Volvo p/n 9144275 "socket housing". It's also used on things like side marker lights, washer fluid pumps and a few other places on 960s and other models. It's readily available from Volvo and a number of aftermarket suppliers for a couple of dollars. This is just the housing. You will also need the two female crimp connectors that click lock in place. The corresponding female pins are listed as p/n 949002. Unfortunately the pins don't appear to be available under that p/n and may have been superseded. A parts desk may be able to help you find something suitable for the connector. Another source for the pins is any electrical/electronics supply house that carries common Molex connectors or butchering them out of a parts car.

Hi Dave, All,
Actually, I got to the same P/N as you did, but I am not so sure it fits, due to its shape not being the same as the male.
However, if you go to Dave's Volvo Page, you can find the same and the one with pigtails:
https://www.prancingmoose.com/blackvinyl.html#2polefemalevolvo
Right under the connector housing, you can see the FEMALE 2-Pole Plug with Pigtails.
I could try that, easier because I do not need to search for the female crimp connectors, but do you think the wires are big enough?
In theory they should, at the end it is just a sensor, but I think the whole wiring suggested in the FAQs is 18 gauge.
Anyways, I will have to start somewhere, as Spook said, I have plenty of work to do. :)
Thank you!

Interesting. I think Amarim has it nailed with p/n 970755, which is also available through Volvo parts counters as well as the sources he mentioned. The dog ear on the connector is quite distinctive for the one in your picture, but isn't present in the connector I found, not that it would be critical if the other dimensions and bevelled shoulders matched. Heck, a couple of crimp terminal sleeves that fit over the male pins would work, protecting them and holding them in place with something like butyl caulk or hot melt glue.
The part I found p/n 9144275 was in a fairly detailed parts schematic that showed a wiring harness to the expansion tank on the right fender, with fitment including the 960 1994 production year, but it was a non-Volvo site. There may have been slightly different connectors used in different years or at different factories and of course your sensor is not original for your car.
I had initially checked Dave Barton's prancingmoose site with no luck. I now see the connector there has the vinyl protected terminals on the pigtail, which are not how they are shown in the schematics I found for 9144275, but are clearly correct for that particular connector housing that clamps shut.
Good luck getting it connected and working. A coolant level sensor is something I've always intended to add if I ever had nothing better to do, but there always seems something more pressing to do on my aging bricks. I'm now under the hood so often for other matters that it's now routine to quickly inspect the expansion tank level, giving it a quick wiggle just to be sure.

Dear Metallo,
You should get this connector:

Volvo P/N 970755
(not sold with female bullet pigtails wiring - have to get separately)
Available from:
1) volvopartswebstore.com
2) eEuroparts.com
3) ebay https://www.ebay.com/p/4013397487
You wrote:
"...but do you think the wires are big enough?"
--> You're right. Its just wiring to a sensor, low current low voltage (not more than 12volts). 18AWG is good enough. You have to cut the entire wire (plus insulator) to measure the inner wire's diameter to really know the gauge. Some manufacturers use thicker insulator for heavy duty usage but internal wire diameter remains the same. Wires rated 18AWG for 600volts use appears thicker than 18AWG for 300volts.
Never gauge a wire by its cover :)

Hi Amarin,
Thank you so much for passing the right P/N.
Volvo will supply it to me tomorrow morning.
At this point, the only part I miss is the metal pin P/N 9148152 and the female bullet pigtails wiring.
The bullet wiring should not be a big issue, the pin is a different story because Volvo does not have any in stock in NA, so I could get it from Sweden, but it takes 3 weeks and that is too long.
I will see if any site sell them.
Thank you!
Alessandro

Dear Metallo,
Hope you're well and stay so. As the coolant overflow sensor is not "mission critical", why not await shipment from Sweden?
You have enough to do to get the engine re-assembled. When the part from Sweden arrives, it can be installed at your convenience.
Hope this helps.
Yous faithfully,
Spook

Hey Spook,
You are right, actually I ordered it at Volvo already because I have understood that it is impossible for me to find a junkyard who has a 960.
However, I was hoping to share my enthusiasm after Amarin pointed me to the connector housing, which I got today from Volvo, but sadly, this is not the right one :(

Even if I force it in, it is not good, and honestly I do not know why Volvo did that side flap, but obviously there must be a reason.

That is just an alignment "key". It usually is used when 2+ similar connectors are near each other to keep someone from plugging in the wrong thing. For example, if you have a turn signal, washer pump, and level sensor all in the same area, you would want to have them "keyed" so that you don't run the power for the windshield washer pump through a sensor and burn up the wiring.
Cut off that plastic arm on the black fitting and don't worry about it ever again.

I'm sorry that didn't go very well. I searched for "volvo 2 pole connector" and that item looked very promising. Without the benefit of a real 960 wiring harness its anybody's best guess.
You could dismantle the sensor's wiring pigtails out from its "one of a kind" connector body then connect them directy to the female pigtails. Cover with electrical tape. This only temporary until you could find a real 960 harness with proper connector.

Hi Amarin,
When I saw the image I was also convinced that the connector was the right one.
I am trying to find a 960 online, but it is not that easy, as there isn't an engine allowing you to search by model, at least, not realistic.
I keep on searching.

Dear Dave Stevens,
Hope you're well. Great Kudos, Sir!!!
I did not want to risk sending Metallo on what might be a "wild goose chase": he has enough to do to get his car into good working order.
I think it would be easier to find a 960 to cannibalize, than to pull together new parts. The connector and a few inches of wire weigh less than 30 grams, so would cost little to send by post, no matter the country-of-origin.
VADIS - bought in 2004 or 2005 - has been worth its weight in Krugies!
Hope this helps.
Yours faithfully,
Spook

Dear Metallo,
Hope you're well. I've retro-fitted a coolant level sensor, to the coolant overflow tank in a '94 940. These sensors were not factory-supplied on most 940s sold in North America.
As the engine bay wiring harness did not include wires for this sensor, I ran a wire to the cluster, through a rubber grommet in the firewall. The sensor's ground wire I affixed to a screw, that I emplaced in the nearby metalwork.
As best I recall, I modified a connector obtained at a salvage yard, so it would fit the sensor's connector.
The parts diagrams in Volvo VADIS - a superseded dealer parts/service database - do not show connector formats with such clarity, that I can specify which one to get. Even were you willing to buy the wiring harness, I doubt those are still available from Volvo.
If you're within reach of a Volvo dealer, a parts specialist may be able to identify the correct connector housing and metal contacts. If those are still available, you can buy them, crimp the wires to the contacts and emplace the contacts in he housing.
Otherwise, if there's a salvage yard that has a 960 - which cars usually had factory-installed coolant level sensors - you can get the connector with wires, and use that.
Hope this helps.
Yours faithfully,
Spook
