--> You're right. Its just wiring to a sensor, low current low voltage (not more than 12volts). 18AWG is good enough. You have to cut the entire wire (plus insulator) to measure the inner wire's diameter to really know the gauge. Some manufacturers use thicker insulator for heavy duty usage but internal wire diameter remains the same. Wires rated 18AWG for 600volts use appears thicker than 18AWG for 300volts.

Never gauge a wire by its cover :)
