That is just an alignment "key". It usually is used when 2+ similar connectors are near each other to keep someone from plugging in the wrong thing. For example, if you have a turn signal, washer pump, and level sensor all in the same area, you would want to have them "keyed" so that you don't run the power for the windshield washer pump through a sensor and burn up the wiring.

Cut off that plastic arm on the black fitting and don't worry about it ever again.
