As far as I know, if your off one tooth one way of the other the engine would still run. Not well but still run. You seem to be getting spark on start, I would check the electrical connections to make sure your getting spark after you turn the key from start to run mode. That appears to be where you problem is base on what I read from you post.

Bad gas! Almost never happens unless the gas has been sitting around for a long time like many many months. Well thats MHO.
