Everything you say is accurate. But the problem persistently defied logical solution and playing parts swap got too expensive. When the oxygen sensor was changed (before the fuel filter was changed) the engine started, idled smoothly and did not stall out. The o2 sensor fault was confirmed by injecting propane into the throttle body and checking the sensor's response.
Why? The 02 sensor sends signals to both the fuel and ignition ECUs. If any of the those signals get mixed up, the timing and fuel injection don't work in sync. And the Rexx Regina system is prone to developing a whole subset of its own flakey problems.
My preference is toward older Volvos; when I have to buy another I will probably stay within the 1984-1990 range WITHOUT the Rexx Regina system.
