Agreed that retarded ignition causes reduced performance. I tend to run on the lean side of the fuel mix curve, so probably running hot. I think if the exhaust system has a cat, unburnt fuel from a rich mix or cool engine, may cause overheating of exhaust components. Thought retarded timing resulted in incomplete burn and cool engine.

Exactly. I was looking for some insight. The books say to disconnect and plug the vacuum hoses at the distributor and set the timing. But this isn't how an engine normally operates, ie. with its vacuum hoses disconnected. So why do it? My distributor also has a vacuum retard to make things even more confusing.
