Thanks for all the help...as it happens I spoke to friend who has a timing light and a dwell meter and he's done it before so I'm going to do it under his supervision.

I last changed those points in 2004 and at the time I was told that they tended to burn out quickly and would need replacing every 6 months. I got two years and lots and lots of miles out of them which I think is pretty decent but maybe I'm wrong?
