I have noticed the same thing in several cars, most noticably on a ski trip using a roof rack. The normal 30 mpg highway dropped to 24 on the way up with 20F ambient, and was at 28 mpg going home at 60F ambient, other conditions roughly equal. It seems the colder, more dense air has a noticeable effect on the vehicle air resistance.
