Hi Brickboarders:
In the past I've reported two occasions when my MY00 S80's alarm has activated in error. The first posting described such an event while the car was parked at a rest stop alongside the Interstate freeway. The second posting was quite recent and described an event that appeared to be caused by another Volvo MY01 V70 owner parked nearby when using their remote.
The effect is for my alarm/siren to sound without the car being unlocked, leaving the LED light flashing rapidly.
I inquired about this today while having my first 7500 mile service. The Service Manager had read a recent Volvo bulletin describing this problem. The problem lies in bad UEM software in *some* 2001 models; S80s, V70s and S60s.
For MY2001 S80s the chasis number range is in the 161196-169730 range (last 7 digits of the VIN). There are ranges given for MY2001 S60s, V70s and XCs but I didn't note them down -- sorry.
As this problem reportedly lies in MY2001 Volvo cars there appeared nothing that could be done to my car to avoid this from happening (however, see followup below). It's up to the owners of the affected MY2001 cars to have their service techs download the Volvo software to bugfix their cars.
If this is of interest to MY2001 owners I'll obtain more details (ie the Volvo Bulletin #, etc) and post back.
So for the time being I'll keep my eye open for other 2001 Volvos nearby when I park my car.
Trouble is, my neighbour has just bought a brand new '01 V70 XC -- soooo, it's going to be interesting :)

My service mgr has found out that my car can be protected from these bothersome faulty 2001 models :) :)
A software download #543 (Part #8637479) can be applied to my MY2000 S80 to protect it from the faulty alarms.
The sw dl process takes about 1hr and will be done at no cost to me as it will be covered under the new car warranty :) :)
Regards... Barry
