I think to test for this 'internal wire corrosion' problem I think you could probably test by pulling the access door and doing the tried and true 'wiggle the wires' test.

If you can induce your problem by wiggling the wires then I'd say you found your problem.

If you can't induce your problem by wiggling/bending/pulling/etc then I'd say check everything else first.

The other post suggested a driving pressure test which sound appropriate to me too.
