I've got the same problem on a '74 (currently loaned out to a friend so I don't have it handy to play with). I think it's the thermostatic idle air thingy on the front of the head; I can prevent it from stalling by really opening up the idle air control at the cost of ludicrously high idling when cold, and it doesn't smell of overfuelling (at least it doesn't on mine) so I've got a replacement thermostatic air thingy on the shelf to be installed when I get the car back. And hope that will fix it.
