solution... brake hardware 200 1986

The main offending sound has been silenced by re-installing the brake pad hardware. It turns out that when I installed new rear brake pads a while back, I didn't knock the pins all the way in (can you blame me? - it's not an easy access job) and they were free to shift a little bit and produce a surprisingly audible click when the brakes were forst engaged. So now the hardware is cleaned up and relubed and the pins are seated and not shifting and the brake noise is gone.
The other noise, the occasional knock during takeoff remains - I'm still tracking that one. Seems like it might not be from under the car, but may be tailgate related? We'll see...
Thanks for the great help,
Tom
