How do you know when to replace your struts? 200 1986

I'm going to replace my rear shocks and do a great deal of suspension parts replacements and I was wondering if I should tackle the struts while I'm down there.

I know I need a spring compressor tool but I'm wondering if they really need replaced or if they will last a while longer?

is there any definitive test for front struts?

thanks,

jack
