My universal rule of thumb for shocks or struts is as follows:
Bounce the end of the car up and down until you get as much motion as you can.
At the bottom of a stroke, let go.
The car should go up past normal ride height and then return to normal ride height and stop.
If it bounces through another 1-2 cycles before stopping completely, it needs fresh dampening components. As noted, if you see oil leaking, you need new components soon, even if dampening is still OK.
The correct amount of residual bounce to expect is adjusted slightly depending on whether you are bouncing a sports car or a six passenger cruiser.
My two bricks both have 225k mi on original struts. They could use new struts, but then, they could use lots of things.
