How do you know when to replace your struts? 200 1986

The ol' bounce test is only good for older cars with shocks. It is absolutely useless if you have struts. Struts that are long dead gone will still pass the bounce test. The best way to tell if they are bad is the feel, especially going over bumps while turning. If you feel that you momentarily lose control in this situation, you need new struts. You can also go by mileage, because there's no way any strut made on this earth is going to last you 150K miles without going belly up. If they're original, change 'em fast. Besides the spring compressor tool you'll need some way of getting the big nut off of the top. If you have a deep socket impact socket that's big enough, you're good to go. Otherwise check the 700-900 FAQ for suggestions on how to get that mother off.
