I have an '82 245T.

"...reaching both hands under turbo leaves no room to work."

Yeah, I know. When I pulled my turbo to fix manifold studs, I disconnected the engine mount and tipped the motor as far as possible -- and blocked the mount up on wooden blocks. It worked for me because my hands are relatively small.

"Lifting from the top is much more reliable, adjustable and safe."

Yes.

I hope you realize I was pulling your leg.
