The emissions test here in Harris County (Houston) requires that the pre-heat hose be connected. If your PH hose is hooked up and the thermostat inside the air box is shot, then you are feeding the AMM a constant diet of HEATED air, which can cause some if not all of your symptoms, and ultimately AMM failure.
Pull the PH hose off the exhaust manifold heat shield and see if there's any difference.
Another item is the large air hose from the AMM to the throttle body. Both my 244 B230F have developed a hole in the bottom side on one of the sticking-out corrugations. I was not able to find the hole but when I replaced the air hose, there it was - big enough to mess things up.
The smaller vacuum hose used in the PCV system is a special oil-resistant type, maybe others are, too.
Good Luck,
Bob
