Working with a failing memory here but...

Is it possible that the replacement prepump is the one for the 740? It would be considered an upgrade on the 240 or at least on the older ones (early 80's). The difference I found when replacing one in an 82 GLT was that the 740 prepump did not have the ridge in the middle that allowed the 240 pump to be "held" with the bracket. The 740 pump would have ended up being supported with just the connecting hose. I put a hose clamp around the 740 pump to serve as a weight bearing edge on the bracket. Perhaps some variation on that theme will work in your case.
