so are they ALL prone to water leaks?

Has the windshield been replaced? Hmmm, 1983 240 - probably. Maybe some bad or nonexistent sealant at the base of the windshield is allowing water to enter.
Do you live in the U.S. South or California, where car bodies last forever? If yes, then read no further. If you are in an area where rust and rot are a problem, consider that your 20 year old car has a rotting floor. I had an '84 240 that didn't have any noticeable leaks until the floor started rusting out. Seems to be a big problem with 240s. The car was damned indestructible and tighter than a duck's behind otherwise...
