Park/Neutral Position Switch, sometimes called the Gear Position Sensor, or the Neutral Safety Switch. Affectionately it's known to Volvo owners as the PNP Switch. It's on the passenger's side of the transmission about 1 inch away from the exhaust pipe. The connector is actually on the drivers side with the wiring going over the top of the trans. Sounds like the dealer replaced the Shift Lock switch. It has nothing to do with your problem, unless you weren't able to move the shift lever when the key was on and you stepped on the brake.
I've heard of PNP's going out w/70,000 miles on the clock. I guess it depends if you live in a hot climate and idle a lot. This will tend to fry the PNP switch sooner. The one in our 95 960 started acting up around 120,000 and it was a Florida car before we bought it.
