I am not sure what the PNP stands for...park, neutral...something. Its a gear selector sensor located on the passenger side of the transmission. Near the down exhaust pipe. This is where it gets a little toasted over time. The lubricant gets cooked. It communicates to the transmission control module (TCM).
It should last well over 100k miles. Your dealer may have replace the microswitch at the gear shift. This is for the release when the brake is depressed to get it out of park. I think the power to the microswitch comes from the PNP switch.
The moving the gear selector back and forth will only work for a few times and eventually things get so gummed up inside that won't work any more. The switch needs to be replaced.
