Once in a while the car will not start. I turn the key, the idiot lights come on, I can hear the fuel pump, but there is no starter motor activity or even a starter solenoid chatter. I jiggle the shift knob, still nothing. I shift into neutral from Park and try again, still nothing. I repeat these steps several times with same results. Then all of a sudden, the starter runs and the engine starts. The frequency of the problem is hard to predict. Happens about once every two or three weeks. Battery has been checked and it's okay, although cold weather seems to aggravate the problem slightly. Volvo dealer has attempted twice to solve the problem. Both times he selected to replace the shift knob switch with no impact on problem. Finally, the dealer has given up, since the car was out of warranty. He obviously did not know how to correct.
Typically, I can get the car to start sooner or later when the problem occurs. However, this last weekend it left me stranded. Evidently, I wore out the battery slightly and it was not until I jumped it that it started. I tried on and off for an hour before I got a jump.
Appreciate any help. Please send by e-mail. (lrayneri@prodigy.net)
Thanks,
