Intermitent cold start problem ('85 244 Turbo)

Does it always start on the second try?

I don't know what else to suggest other than to test it all. At least you'll know where you stand. If it's stumbling like that I'd wonder if something is mucking with the mixture.. use your nose a bit, do you smell lots of extra fuel (in the car, under the hood, out the tailpipe) when it fails to start or stay running?

Aw hell if you wanna get rid of it real cheap, I might just take it :)

Good luck, I hope your problem car doesn't sour you on Volvos.
