volvo DRL's run at full light output (brightness). You should check on exactly what the 3rd party option does. I suspect that it uses the same amount of current that the volvo does, but it likely pulses the current to make the lights appeard dimmer. As I remember with the volvo system, not only are the headlights on- so are the tail lights.

Comments from other threads indicate that the 1992-1995 canadian volvo light switch has a small rod in the switch body. Moving the rod allows you to turn the DRL off or on (as you desire).
