Yes, have someone hold your steering wheel first then do the test. Sounds like it could be outer or inner tie rods. Let’s start there. Did you check the outer tie rods for torn boots and/or play at the joint? Is there any harshness going over sharp bumps? That would indicate bad outer tie rods.

Check the inner tie rods for play too. Also look for a torn boot.

If fluid is leaking through the inner tie rod boots the rack is leaking but it can be saved if not too bad by flushing and replacing the fluid.

Have you checked your actual ball joints and struts/strut mounts yet?
