I really am having a tough time makin gup my mind here. I've got this 123GT that seems to have landed in my carport. The engine was removed in about 1979 for a refresh that never got finished. Original engine may or may not exist, and/or there may be no way to get the numbers for a search.
So, in the mean time, I'll be fitting an engine from a donor car. The choices at hand are as follows:
#1: A B20E that currently resides in a horribly rusted 1800E. The car ran great and used little or no oil when parked due to a transmission catastrophe 3 or 4 years ago. there was a hiccup with the injection, but of course, for the 123, it'd get a pair of SUs. Unknown miles on this motor. Problems are that it's a B20 and that I wouldn't be able to hide that or the injector ports. Plus in that it'd be easy to pull, since currently no tranny is attached. The car will never run again.
Anyone know if the exhaust from an 1800E would fit to a 122/123 coupe? It's not original exhaust, but it is tight.
#2: A B18 in a '65 122s. This engine is known to be fairly freshly rebuilt, and known to have been bored to 2 liter spec. Not totally sure I like the idea of a 2 liter B18. But it's a good, solid motor. Biggest problem here is that this car could be made to run again, with just a pair of carbs and a distributor. Advantage is it includes all the little things I might find myself needing.. linkages, cables, exhaust, etc.
#3: This is at the bottom of my list, as it's earmarked for the 122 wagon. Early non-injected B20 that's been recently (from a miles standpoint) rebuilt to unknown specs. All I know is that it's got double valve springs, and had TONS of power in it's current home, a '68 145. Even with the downdraft Weber (it'll have SUs, of course). Pros: Plenty of power, known good. Cons: earmarked for another car, does not offer up other parts besides engine. And it would be the most difficult to get to from its current location.
The short of the goal is simply to get the 123GT running. No modifications beyond what would be bolt up, so nothing that can't be put back to original, should the right engine be found.
I guess I should just get off the computer and go make up my mind, but it's good to organize my thoughts, and I would love any input from y'alls!
thanks!
