Uncle 740_dan,
So you did http://www.brickboard.com/FAQ/700-900/EngineOBDCodes.htm?
As for fuel smell, inspect the hose between the fuel rail low pressure return to the steel fuel return. If it is stiff without supple, or, more likely, spongy, replace immediately.
Check the wire harness between the engine control system computers (LH-Jetronic for fuel and Bosch EZK for ignition and, if equipped, EGR) at 33 years, connectors can corrode and fail, the wire harness can chafe against body pieces, sensors can fail, and so on. A multimeter with continuity and resistance (ohmmeter), and the usual voltmeter functions helps with wire-harness and connected sensors.
With power off and battery disconnected, you can disconnect, inspect, and reconnect wire harness junctions. Same for connectors at the computers. Moisture intrusion can cause faults with electrical pieces inside the passenger cabin.
I guess that does it.
Hope that helps.
MacDuff.
