You need to see a CPA for professional help IF you cannot find copies of the returns. Note that there are limitations on the look back period depending on whether fraud is alleged or not, so your liability may not extend all the way back to 1997. A hot tip: save PAPER copies of all tax returns, backup schedules, and the data used to prepare them for seven years after filing the returns. If you used a computer to prepare the returns, save as well an archived CD with the files along with the program disks. The latter change every year.
Lemme guess: California is the state, right?
