When it's -40 degrees, I don't care what car you have, you get a few failed starts. As soon as it starts rolling on its own it will very quickly heat up the exhaust manifold which then defrosts the intake manifold by way of the preheater making the car run well enough to get up to a operating temp. Without the preheater, you have about 10 near starts before the engine warms up enough to defrost itself.

I thought removing the preheater didn't matter when I lived in Iowa City. I knew I was wrong when I found myself in St. Cloud nearly having to call a tow truck. After this, I put it back on the 740 and have had no trouble starting in the winter.
