Squeeky Brakes After Replacement 700 1990

I had new front rotors put on and new brake pads all over. Now periodically the brakes squeek. Mostly notice this after they are hot and I've been driving a while. This squeek did not start until after about 500 miles or so after they were put on.

Is this normal or is this just brake dust accumulating. Seems to come from the rear breaks.

Car is a '90 740 Turbo wagon.

Thanks in advance for any comments.

In addition to anti-squeel applied to the backs of the pads, it helps to lube the contact points where the pads sit on the calipers. Use only high-temp brake grease.

I had the same problem. Tried every type of brake pad goop known to man. The squeeking would always return. I finally cured it by installing the genuine Volvo shims.

Perry: you didn't tell us which brand of rotors and pads you had installed; FWIW, I have read about most of them, but went with OEM for both, because the brakes are one of VoVo's best safety feature IMHO. The important part about new pads and rotors is to go VERY easy on the brakes, giving yourself a slower ride and longer, gentler braking distances, so as not to 'glaze' the pads; this 'gentle' method is recommended for as much as the first 500 miles--some say less, others more.. The amount of dust from OEM pads is more than worth the braking efficiency. Also, the use of Syl-glide, and possibly shims for the rear pads is often suggested.--PD.

Re: Squeeky Brakes After Replacement 700 1990

I have squeeky brakes as well. My FORMER mechanic replaced the brakes but did something to the calipers, my new mechanic explained it to me but I can't remember exactly what he explained. Basically, whatever he did caused the rotors to smooth out or something, leading to the squeak. The calipers are bad or uneven or something.

My brakes work, but they'll squeak until I replace the rotors AGAIN and the calipers I believe is what he told me. !@$^#$^@$% to my former mechanic, a pox on him and his descendants.

Re: Squeeky Brakes After Replacement 700 1990

I just recently changed out my pads for about the 5th time and attempted to take a short cut by not applying the silcone grease to the back of the pads. They squeeled somthing awful. Had to pull them back off last weekend and apply the silcone grease to the backs of the pads and guess what? No more squeeks and squeels. Hope this helps.

Re: Squeeky Brakes After Replacement 700 1990

What i find is unless you use the volvo boxed rear pads and supplied-together shims, cost of which is comparable to getting shims+non volvo boxed pads separately, the noise will go away with grease but will return after a while.

when spring comes, the supposedly oem pads will come out and volvo pads and shims will go in for me.

Tom
