thermostat stuck open = problems? 200 86

Is driving around with a stuck-open thermostat bad for the car? (I plan to replace it, but am taking a road trip today, dunno if there's time)

I have reason to suspect that my thermostat is stuck open. Driving around in very cold air last night, it took forever for the heater to get going. Even then it wasn't so hot.

The temp guage has been reading very low for a while, but I always reasoned that the compensating board was going south (I'm quite sure of this one) and I have not yet pulled the instrument cluster.

Thanks for any advice.

    Vytas,

You know what they say - "If you hear hoofbeats behind you think horses not zebras". I had this exact sympton on a 93 200 and the thermostat had actually fallen apart and was physically jammed open. Come on - you needed to change that coolant anyway, didn't you?

I wouldn't run more than than a day or two like that - mine was hanging by a metal thread and a piece could have dropped down where I couldn't easily get to it. Or worse yet - "Mr. Water Pump, meet Mr Metal Shard from the thermostat".

If that's not it - sounds like you know the drill: sending unit threads and connection, sending unit wire thru intake manifold area, temp. comp. board pins, ....

    Robb

I just wish I wasn't set to leave in an hour or so. What's the best/quickest way to drain just enuff coolant to change the t-stat without making a mess?

By not reaching operating temp you cause a little more wear & tear (negligible in the short term) due to colder oil, etc... and you'll likely burn more fuel if the engine stays cool/cold.

Replacing the thermostat is a 5-minute operation. You probably wouldn't have any problems if you didn't, but why take a chance?

You're right, I should change it out.

      Thanks.
