You know what they say - "If you hear hoofbeats behind you think horses not zebras". I had this exact sympton on a 93 200 and the thermostat had actually fallen apart and was physically jammed open. Come on - you needed to change that coolant anyway, didn't you?

I wouldn't run more than than a day or two like that - mine was hanging by a metal thread and a piece could have dropped down where I couldn't easily get to it. Or worse yet - "Mr. Water Pump, meet Mr Metal Shard from the thermostat".

If that's not it - sounds like you know the drill: sending unit threads and connection, sending unit wire thru intake manifold area, temp. comp. board pins, ....
