Where's the overdrive solenoid located? 200 89

Am trying to replace an overdrive solenoid on my '89 240 automatic, but can't find where it is located.

Can someone tell me where the OD solenoid is located (reference distance to other parts), how long it should take to replace, and what the major steps are in the process of doing the replacement?

It looks to be nothing more than remove the bolts, cleaning the area, attaching the solenoid and connecting the lead. What am I missing when it comes to doing this job, other than where the part is located?

Thanks in advance.

I haven't replaced the solenoid on my tranny (yet) but the Bentley manual is very clear on the operation. It shows the solenoid to be on the right (driver's) side of the trans nearly centered above the pan. It mounts vertically on a small flat "shelf" on the side of the trans. It's a little crowded there. The manual says to replace the O-rings when R&R the solenoid. It also says to route the wiring harness back through the protective sleeve and reconnect the connector. It seems pretty straight forward. Are you sure the solenoid is the problem? There are several potential electrical problems which could prevent engaging the OD. Check the Archives for more help. This is a really great web site!

If you don't have the Bentley manual, I can recommend it. Just one repair job will pay for it.

No, I'm not sure the solenoid is the problem. It could be me, it could be the OD switch in the gear shifter, it could be wiring that is shorting out/not conducting, it could be sun spots.

Seriously, I've been inquiring for about a week. One of my earlier posts to a differently named thread describes my tale.

Does your manual indicate how to access the shelf? In other words, do I need to remove any panels from the underside, etc?

Also, does your manual describe how to access the OD switch on the gear shifter, as a reminder this is an automatic trans.

Thanks for taking the time, Jim.
