TIRES 700 1989

Just purchased 1989 740 GL, nice shape but definitely needs tires. Presently has Michelins. Any suggestions re: which tires perform well, or for that matter, which tires to avoid? Thank you. P.S. this is a New England car!

Well, I'm frugal (read poor) so I figured I'd give my opinion to round out the responses you received. I have an 89 745GL with 200k miles. The car is in good shape despite its 600 dollar purchase price. I just put tires all around and chose the BFGoodrich made Ultra series in a 195/60/15 size. They are an H rated tire and so far Im very happy with them--excellent wet weather performance, very quiet and very grippy in the dry. Best part is the $56 dollar per tire purchase price including mounting, balancing and four wheel alignment from Town Fair Tire....

Too cheap to buy snows this year so I'll let you know how they handle in the white stuff.....

    Jack --

I'll agree with Jerry — I have Yokohama Avid H4's on my '86 245, and absolutely love 'em. On my '91 740, I have D60A2's and I'm happy with them, but do feel they're a tad harsh and a bit noisy. Next time it's Yokos (from Tire Rack).

Personally, I'm not a Michelin fan. The times I've tried them (admittedly years ago) I found they started hydroplaning when the weatherman said, "Chance of clouds tomorrow..." But I expect newer design are better, though expensive (gotta pay for that advertising...).

Tire wisdom is like discussing religion, beer, politics. True knowledge floats around in the fog—just outta sight and just outta reach.

    Jack:

I'm pretty happy with a set of Continental CH95s I got from Tire Rack for $47 apiece (on sale, size 205/60-15). However, this time of year in New England, you really need a set of snows, and for obvious reasons, I'm no expert on snow tires.

    Re: TIRES 700 1989

    Jack,

I think Yokohoma offers some of the best values in both winter and summer tires.

I've had good luck with the Yoko Avid H4 in fair weather and the Yoko Guardex 600 or F720 snows for winter. All are about 50-55 and bucks a tire (205/60/15)at Discount Tire Direct. You might check out their prices.

I've run Dunlop D60A2s and found them to stick to dry roads better than the Avids but they ride a bit too harsh for me and make a lot more noise.

I would recommend getting snows on all four wheels for winter driving ...

the all season tires seem to be good for about three seasons and winter isn't one of them. My $.02

    Re: TIRES 700 1989

I like the Michelin MXV's I have on my 87 745T Excellent ride, handling and long lasting. But Expensive at $150 apiece. Over the years I had several different brands. Goodyears are nice depending on the model but short life, due to soft compounds. BF Good for Nothings say's enough. My first 242 Turbo came with Pirelli P6's great tire. Tried a Goodyear NCT (west german manufacture) Not the US made, Super Tire, loved them. The US version has a different tread design. Don't even know if still available. There really isn't one all around tire for year around use in New England. You will need a set of snows for the winter. I drive the swedish tire Gislaves for the winter. I like the results I've had with them. It comes down to what type or ride, handling, life expectancy and price you will decide on. One thing I have learn about tires is you get what you pay for.

Other Volvo owners will chime in on you post. Read and take in their advice and experence. With all the different types of tires they drive you should get a large variety of opinions. Good luck!

I have michelin Xones on my 740, they are very good in the wet weather, I agree with everyone else about the need for snowtires, definately required. I tend to go with the michelins because they are long lasting and good in all weather conditions. For snows I currently have the goodyear iceguards they offer excellent traction. Hope this helps
