There is supposed to be some end play with the spec being 0.0028"-0.0079".

You want to be closer to the minimum if a new bearing(s) are being installed.

After changing shims and tightening the bolts, I always give the ends of both axles a whack with a copper hammer to set the bearings and then I check the end play.
