I don't work for Volvo, just trying to explain a few things and I'm sorry that I don't have any good workable solutions for you.
At this time, all you can try to do is work something out between your independant guy and Volvos customer relations people.
You're just one of many who apparently didn't know how fussy the car is with tires but trying to now pin blame on people won't be an easy task. Like I said before, there are many AWDs now on the roads everywhere with mismatched tires just as your car has and I believe that there will be more angle gear failures in the near future as a result.
Where I work, we can tell people all day to get 4 of the same tires replaced everytime we see this but we can't force the issue.
