Mike O-
I've seen a LOT of intermittant bulb failure lights. Same symptom- now you see it, now you don't. 99% of the time, it is a tail light bulb problem, but the bulb has fixed the problem 100% of the time. I have NEVER has to replace the bulb holder/socket (except for a front turn/marker) to fix this problem on a late model. If you look at the offending bulb, even if it's working now, the glass is discolored/'smoked' and if you 'flick' the bulb it may go out- due to a broken filament that happens to be touching at the moment. I usually replace all 4 tail light bulbs if there is a bad or intermittant one- they all have the same hours of usage, probably made on the same machine by the same operator on the same day, ect. Anybody that questions my logic, I ask them if they buy one shoe at a time. I buy mine in pairs, even if only one has a hole in the sole.
