Dave,
I think I was the 1%, Your logic is sound and Volvo even tried those fixes. It just seemed that the only way to fix the problem was to replace the rear socket assembly. That fixed the problem. So if the problem is recurring then I would recommend that they replace the socket assembly.
I am also willing to bet that I have had the most things that can go wrong with the C70 go wrong. The list of failures and solutions are long and extensive and I am probably looking at a replacement under the lemon law. I truly do love this car, I hope Volvo replaces it with another. All I can say is that the car feels mechanically sound to me. The problems I have had, although irritating and inconvienent have not shaken my confidence in the inherent quality of the design and critical mechanical components. I am not a mechanic by I feel that the powertrain is one of the best around. It's smooth, quick & strong, and although I have no personal experience or evidence to prove it I think it could be a reliable car for years & miles to come.
