I actually /can/ read the O2 values using my scanner (carcode.com) so that's easy.
I'm still not completely clear on which vac line is the one to the EVAP purge valve, but I suppose some digging might make me feel more confident in that. Is this the one that snakes down along the driver's side of the cooling fan assembly/shroud?
You're right, pinching the fuel return line would indeed make the car run rich. I actually got my sister home once when her car was running way too lean (maybe it was an O2 problem, I forget) by lightly clamping the return line on her 740 with a pair of vice-grips. Certainly not a long term solution but it got us home.
It sounds like the point of the 'combined instrument' line removal is just to introduce unmetered air. In that case it should suffice to just pull any vac line that doesn't run anything critical (like FPR).
Thanks for the help!
