The odds that it just needs freon? Quite slim
Though that doesn't mean it has to be a huge (read: expensive) fix. I don't know how bad it is, or how quickly its gotten bad, but it will likely need refrigerant. Go to a shop and have them charge your A/C. Yeah it will cost a little more, but you'll get better stuff. Also they should put (you might have to ask) the dye in it as well. That way if it leaks out you can pinpoint it. Hopefully its a connection which should stay under $100 to fix. A condenser will probably run you ~200 to have it done, compressor between 5-600 if you get an OEM part, less if you go aftermarket. Hopefully its not the evaporator, thats just not worth replacing (1300+) with all the labor involved...
PS Since indies are somewhat of a crapshoot, i looked up the dealer in your area. They have a special right now for $50 off your 90k service. While thats not too much (IIRC 90k service on those is about $1100, its a big service time, sorry) its something. If you want to go indie shop I recommend staying with an import shop. There are a couple in your neck of the woods, one would have to be good. Otherwise, flag down a couple of volvo owners and ask where they go and who they'd recommend. If you don't see too many around, look on craigslist at people selling theirs and just send them an e-mail... Remember most of what you have to replace now is the first time its going to be replaced. This means that you can expect it to last that long again. An extra $50-100 for genuine parts that you'll get 90k miles out of isn't that bad of a deal...
