There's a pretty good article about exhaust systems in this months Popular Hot Rodding magazine. According to it (one source) how far back you want the X pipe is a function of the rev range of the engine. For us efi guys (below 6500, vast majority below 6000), it needs to be 20-22" AFTER the collector on a LONG TUBE header. That puts it back at or just behind the tranny crossmember. It's only if you've got one that's revving and making power up above 7 grand or so that you want to move the Xpipe up under the tranny.
Even if it's not ideally located, from all I've read and folks I've talked to, the X-pipe helps quiet the system down, which is my secondary goal here. This thing has just been too loud for too long.
And if you get pics for me, you are a good man Mats. I've about decided to forego the new headers. I'll just have to work with the muffler shop when they do the reconfiguration - the header will have to come off so they can insert the flanged head pipe on the passenger side from the top. Hopefully I can talk them into a long, non-welded slip fitting on that side with a SS band clamp so I can get the system off without lifting the motor out of the way.
