Stout V8

For the new user of the V8 thread,,or the guys who are thinking about doing this, here's pics of my project which I did in the summer of 2000. It still looks the same, never gets driven in the rain or snow. It's a 302 (out to 347 ) with a Ford AOD. Great ride, lots of pop!

Did you use the JTR "manual"? Have an '81 245 I'm starting to amass parts for a conversion on. Have a donated L31 5.7L block and considering a 383 Stroker kit. Very clean engine bay is why I ask about the manual, everything looks like it's where they recommend. Any issues you ran into unexpectedly?

    Great final product!

Haha! I purchased mine before Thanksgiving 2016 and have since read it twice. Depending on power plant and transmission choices we may or may not use it explicitly, but if you just followed their plan it seems to be a killer road map for a successful swap. Did you use the manual for your swap? Did you go Chevy or Ford for your power plant? We've go some preliminary body work to do on my car before we get to the engine conversion. Can't wait to get started on this project!

The 5.0L Ford was swapped into mine in June, 1996, removed Sept. 2015 and a new crate LS3 was installed and cranked Sept. 2016. Can't describe what an improvement the new LS is over the previous gen Ford and Chevy small blocks.

I can only imagine how much fun an LS3 is. Unfortunately I don't have the budget to include an LS swap with a manual tranny. I am fortunate enough to have a gear head ASE master mechanic for a father in law and a wife that understands. He has purchased my '81 245 as a Christmas present and has agreed to couch quarter back me through the build. He is currently on his 15th resto project and I'm doubly lucky to have a brother in law that works in the marine repair industry specializing in fiberglass, gel coat, and paint repair. I currently have a donated L31 long block assembly, but we've yet to take a peek inside and know if it's good inside. I plan to either freshen it up with new internals and a mild cam to wake it up a bit (in the 200-230 degree range) if the cylinders are good or punch it out and go with a 383 Stroker kit if the cylinders are bad. The block comes from a 'Burb so I not expect much of an issue with cylinder damage. Can't wait to get started!

P.S. Can some one clue me in on how to post pics to the forum so I can't post pics of my Brick?

I had just as much fun building my unit as I get out of driving it. I don't have any knowledge of the details of a Chevy engine swap so I can't help you in that department but generally speaking they have to be pretty much the same, just the details being different. It sounds like you have a lot of help standing by.

I use a hosting site (photobucket) -- and my pics can be "tagged" with various types of links - "direct", "IMG", "html", etc. On this site I copy the "html" tag for the pic and paste it right here in the text.

I used a diesel radiator, well it came out of a diesel 245 and I put the inlet and outlets where they needed to be. It's a 2 row, adequate on a summer day except when stuck in traffic. It looks like your custom might be a 3 row? Can't tell from the pic but it looks great. I'm thinking about changing mine.

The rad for the 5.0L that used to be in mine was built using at 3-row copper core (16 fins/inch) in a diesel housing. It had a 2-row core in it originally, but in summer in the south with A/C on, it had trouble keeping up, so we went to a 3-row, 16 fin/inch core.

The new aluminum unit is 2 1" rows. You can't really compare the old copper/brass units to newer aluminum units as fin design and the size of the tube rows has changed over the years.

Thanks for the details on the radiator Mike. I appreciate it. I'll just have to decide what I'm going to do with it probably in the spring. I have another diesel radiator standing by, all I have to do is change the inlet outlet ports.

No I didn't use a manual. I engineered everything myself. I used a Ford because of the front distributor. I just thought it would make it easier. The only thing I didn't think about was the location of the heater inlet outlet hoses. I had to transfer them from the driver's side to the passenger side. Good luck with the project. I hope everything works out for you. Feel free to ask me any questions on any problem you might run into.

I just tried to open that up by cutting and pasting and you're right. It didn't work. So... I did this.. ( cardomain.com ) and typed in (2378723). A small picture of the car came up and I clicked on the picture and the four pictures came up.

Looks very nice! The V8 in the 240 makes for a really special car.

I've got an '83 245 GLT that I put a 5.0 and built AOD into back in 1995. Still a blast to drive, but unfortunately the car is starting to have rust issues . . . .

Interesting about your front seats--could you post details when you get a chance?

      THANKS!

      Steve A-

The seats are from a 99 or a 2000 loaded S60. Since the seat hardware and
Brackets are not compatible with the 240, I took the 240 seat brackets off and mounted them on the S60 seats. As I recall, it was fairly easy to do. Of course then they bolted right into the 240 mounting holes.

Nice! Have you been to any Boston area events? Your car looks a little familiar.

I haven't been able to daily drive mine in a while, I have some rear end noise that I have to fix.

That worked! Looks like it's been fun for you - and that's all that matters. Some pics of mine here in some of the other threads in this section. 5.0L efi powered since 1996, and switched to LS3 a bit earlier this year. Mine too consistently knocked down 17-18 mpg around town and 25-26 on the highway - best interstate tank of 28.7!
